Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has recently announced a ban on the establishment of new casinos in the southern provinces of Kep and Kampot.

This restriction applies to all new casino ventures in these areas, with the notable exception of existing establishments and integrated resorts on Bokor Mountain. Notably, Dara Sakor's casino by Century Entertainment is not affected by this new regulation.

Prime Minister Manet explained that the ban aims to redirect investment towards sectors such as hotels, hospitality, tourism, manufacturing, industry, agriculture, trade, and special economic zones (SEZs). The policy is also intended to support the preservation of cultural and religious values, enhance security, and improve the order of tourist destinations.

Currently, most of Cambodia's casinos are located in coastal regions, with a significant number along its borders with neighboring countries. According to the Commercial Gambling Management Commission of Cambodia (CGMC), there are 48 casinos in provinces bordering Thailand, 35 near the Vietnam border, and only one in Phnom Penh.

The ban aligns with Article 19 of the Law on Management of Commercial Gaming, enacted in 2020, which restricts gambling establishments in specific areas to preserve cultural and religious heritage. However, casinos operating in these locations prior to the law's implementation are exempt, as specified in Article 20.
