The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is located in the Pacific Northwest, comprising fourteen islands. The islands that form part of the archipelago are known as the Mariana Islands, including the island of Guam. Since World War II, the Northern Mariana Islands are administered by the US. Currently, it is an unincorporated dependent territory of the United States, with the title of the Commonwealth.
Federal law applies to the islands, but it has its government and constitution. US federal law has banned online gambling for many years. However, the Department of Justice reinterpreted the law and opened the way for US states and territories to legalize online casino gambling.
Even though online casinos are illegal in US territories, the Northern Mariana Islands have the authority to legalize it within its borders. However, the government of the Northern Mariana Islands has not created any laws regarding online gambling in the casino, meaning it is still considered illegal on the islands.
Online casinos are not legally operating in the Northern Mariana Islands. Online casinos in other US states are also not allowed to accept players from this territory. However, Mariana Islands residents are still free to gamble on any international online casino sites available to them.
Although online gambling is prohibited, traditional casinos are entirely legal. All casinos on the Northern Mariana Islands must have a gambling license and pay corresponding gambling tax to provide services legally. Administrative divisions have their own game-control governing body.
The largest casino in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is Imperial Pacific Resort. The casino has more than 190 slots available, as well as 70 gaming tables on offer. The games are currently housed in a temporary location, as the construction of the final site is slated to be completed by 2020, with 100 table games, 250 slots, and VIP rooms.
